What’s Swiss Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin smelling in the photo below? 🤔 Valley partner VunaNexus AG recently opened their second manure reactor on a pig farm 🐷👏👏 But this wasn't any pig farm. It was the Bigler family's farm - farmers known to be at the cutting edge of Swiss farming innovation. So what was the project aiming to achieve? The manure reactor separates and nitrifies swine urine - reducing ammonia emissions by up to 60% and improving animal welfare to boot. The stabilised urine also becomes odourless, easier to spread AND the process makes it easier to predict the amount of nutrients added to the soil. VunaNexus is now busy working on developing more ways to recycle nitrogen from our waste water and more treatment plants are under construction. Watch this space! We were invited to the new farm of the Bigler family to present our nitrification technology in the presence of the member of the federal council, Guy Parmelin! As part of an Innosuisse project, we aim to prove that with a nitrification reactor and the urine separation system developed by Schauer Agrotronic GmbH, we will be able to strongly reduce ammonia and odor emissions compared to a traditional farm. The nitrified urine is stable and odorless, hopefully also allowing farmers more accurate nutrient spreading. Happy Earth Day 🌎 On this special day, we would like to shed light on the recycling of yellow water 🔄 Preserve water by transforming urine into fertiliser 💧 The company VunaNexus AG, closely connected to EAWAG in Zurich, a partner in the MELiSSA consortium, has developed a unique technology that can recycle and treat urine, producing a safe and certified fertiliser called Aurin. The system works by collecting urine from urinals and separation toilets, treating it through a series of biological and physical steps to remove pollutants and bad smells, and concentrating the nutrients into Aurin. The system only requires urine, air and electricity as inputs, generating Aurin and distilled water as outputs. Thanks to co-funding from the ESA BASS programme, this technology was recently installed at the new ESA Headquarters premises located rue Mario Nikis in Paris. #EarthDay #Earth #yellowwater #watertreatment #recyclingwater #VunaNexus

En résumé, les 3 défis majeurs que relève la gestion circulaire des nutriments : 1. elle réduit la dépendance de l'agriculture suisse vis-à-vis des importations d'engrais 2. elle réduit l'apport de substances nutritives dans les sols et les eaux suisses, 3. elle permet de produire des engrais de manière beaucoup plus écologique.
